 Papua covers most of the western half of the island of New Guinea and nearby islands. Its capital is Jayapura. It's the largest and easternmost province of Indonesia. The province originally covered the entire western half of New Guinea. In 2003, the Indonesian government declared the westernmost part of the island, around Bird's Head Peninsula, a separate province; its name was first West Irian Jaya and is now West Papua.

West Papua (formerly Irian Jaya Irjabar abbreviated) is a province of Indonesia, located in western New Guinea. The capital is Manokwari. This is the name of the province of West Irian Jaya previously defined in the Act No. 45 of 1999. Based on Government Regulation No. 24 of 2007 dated 18 April 2007, the name was changed to the province of West Papua. West Papua and Papua is a province of obtaining special autonomy status.
This province includes the Bird's Head region of Papua island and surrounding islands. In the north, the province is bounded by the Pacific Ocean, the western border with the province of North Maluku and Maluku provinces, the eastern part bounded by the Gulf of Paradise, with the south and southeast of Seram Sea borders the province of Papua.
